Opening the Door to a New Beginning

For eight months, JFS Care Manager Grace worked alongside Walter to help him find permanent housing.

At 67, Walter had spent decades working as an electrician before a stroke changed everything. Unable to work, he lost his apartment and eventually found himself living in his car. Yet every time he met with Grace, he showed up with quiet determination and the hope that things could still change.

When a housing apartment became available, Walter did his part to complete the application, gather the paperwork, and answer difficult questions about his past. He was willing to try despite knowing his application told only part of his story: a broken lease, poor credit score in the 400s. The landlord said no.

Walter was discouraged by another setback, but Grace didn’t give up.

She reached out to the landlord and explained what the paperwork couldn't: Walter's financial struggles began after his stroke and were not from a pattern of poor decisions. His credit history reflected a devastating period in his life, not a pattern of irresponsibility. Importantly, Walter was now connected to supportive services that could help him remain stable in his housing and ensure his rent was paid on time.

Walter also had to be willing to accept support and take responsibility for maintaining his new home. He was. By the end of the week, he received the keys to his own apartment.

After months of sleeping in his car, Walter finally had a place to call home with a door he could lock, a bed to sleep in, and enough space to keep the tools that would allow him to begin working again.

Stories like Walter's are possible because people choose to invest in one another. Sometimes that is advocacy. Sometimes it's practical support. Sometimes it's staying alongside a person long enough for them to find a way forward.
